Response To Intervention (RTI) is the intervention used to determine whether
a child should be referred for special education. RTI starts as
additional help in a general educational classroom. RTI is multitier, depending
on the needs and progress of a child. RTI is tested using screening instruments, progress monitoring,
and curriculum-based measurement (CBM).
Tier 1
includes 80-85% of children. The child is still in the mainstream classroom receiving
extra support.
Tier 2
includes 15% of children. The children get pulled out to the resource room a
few times a week for extra help.
Tier 3
includes 5% of children. The children get placed into a special classroom for
most of the day.
